ISCA Convention Recap

Last Saturday was the final day of the annual ISCA (International Society of Caricature Artists) convention, this year in the US' top tourist destination, Sandusky, Ohio.
I've been going to these conventions for 10 years now, and alway come away from it enlightened and motivated.
For those who've never been, this is basically what happens at these things:  2-300 artists from around the world get together, set up their equipment, pull out their paints, sharpen their pencils and draw each other.  For a week.

Dave Boyer, Tom Richmond, Bob 'Beast' East, Mike Hasson, RonKantrowitz and Sam Viviano in the drawing room.
Actually it's a lot more than just that, there's seminars, workshops and lots of networking.  But the most important part of this week is that artists from all sorts of backgrounds and schools get together and do nothing but draw each other for hours on end.

This gives everybody the chance to experiment with drawings; try new techniques, different styles, media, all the while all the while upping the humor factor of what their doing.  The whole week is a blast, as I get to see old friends, draw and paint, and basically remind myself why I became an artist in the first place.  All the drawings, paintings and sculptures can be put on display in the convention center, and for those who are interested, ballots are passed out where all the artists can vote for their favorite artist, caricature, best color technique, best black & white technique, etc, etc.  There's an award banquet at the end and numerous awards are handed out, most notably, the 'Nosey' awards, for Caricaturist of the Year.

My 'Nosey' trophies from a couple of  years ago.

Here's some shots I took of some of the artwork that was on display....

An artists's 3D redition of my friend Jeremy Townsend.

Artist Seo Kim.  One of my favorite caricatures of the show. Super funny.

Jeremy Townsend's wall.

Super-talent Court Jones.  That's me in the lower right.  I forgot my chin that day...

A sketchbook watercolor I did my buddy Joe Bluhm.
In addition to the stunning array of artwork, we had some awesome guest speakers this year...
Hermann, Sam, Mark and Tom
From Mad Magazine: Hermann Mejia, Sam Viviano, cover artist Mark Fredrickson, and Tom R.  Tom acted as bodyguard.

The amazing Hermann and some of his caricature sculptures.

Here's some random shots of the awards banquet...

Me, Jason Seiler and Court Jones.  2/3 of this picture contains a whole lotta raw talent!

Sculptor extraordinaire Jeff Redford, past president Dion Socia, some guy named Joe, and whats-his-face.

Another highlight, the Lobster Claw machine.
