Sketch of the Day!

Sketch of the day?  Don't all artist blogs have that?  You can't think of anything more creative than that?
Nope.

This is from a photo I've had pinned up on my bulletin board in the studio for probably 10 years now, always with the thought that one day, I'd like to draw it.  It's clearly from some men's rag like Maxin, and it's so unrecognizable she almost doesn't look exactly like Johnny Depp.
I KNOW!

Here's a quickie 7-10 minutes sketch.  It ain't pretty and it was hard to fight off the urge to Photoshop some of the boo-boos out!  Artists in general I think are by nature self conscious of their artwork, and sketches for me are the worst to show to other people, as that's the drawing that isn't refined and polished, and is a place to work out all the bad habits.  If that makes sense....
Pretty rough!  But, that's what sketching is for!  (My friend Joe Bluhm published a whole book on the subject.)  I could spend an hour pointing out what's wrong with this drawing, starting with the proportions, but I do like the caricature in the face.  Looking at this again, it's obvious I had more fun and subsequently spent more time there than anywhere else in the drawing.  That's something I think I need to pay attention too...
From that, here's a really rough wather color I did based on that sketch:
I liked this painting at first, but later decided it had a lot of boo-boos in it as well, and hope to someday do a nicer one that I can use in my portolio.
